Preface

In giving lectures on Kawi or Old Javanese to English-speaking students, I have encountered the difficulty that they are very dependent upon my explanation of the words in Old Javanese texts before they are able to discover for themselves the meaning of whole phrases or sentences. Outside the lecture hours the only thing they often could do was transcribe the Kawi script into Latin letters, or repeat what had been discussed, for they had no dictionary.

Thanks to the fraternal help of Dr. A. L. Becker, supporter of this work, who has patiently corrected the English translation together with Ms. Mary Zurbuchen and Mr. Stanley B. Hoffman, both students in Old Javanese, I succeeded during my lectureship at the University of Michigan in finishing this Kawi-English wordlist, based on my Kamus Kawi (Jawa Kuno) – Indonesia, and compiled partly from the material I got from Dr Soewito Santosa, now lecturer at the Australian National University, Canberra. It contains about 13,000 entries, of which more than half-approximately 7,542 – originate from Sanskrit. The influence of Sanskrit, however, is limited to the enrichment of the vocabulary. It had never any apparent impact on the Kawi grammatical system.

I am aware that all the material I have used is far from being perfect and sufficient. The study and the use of more Kawi texts would be necessary in order to revise it: new entries can be added, better and more specific or detailed explanations can be given where a lack or an obscurity is felt. In any event, this book will be of some help to those who want to analyze Old Javanese texts independently.

In order to facilitate the user in finding the basic root words used as entries, the following alphabetic succession of vowels and consonants is given, as well as the sandhi-rules:

--- viii ---

a) vowels:

aěö (= eu)iueaio

b) consonants:

kkhgghng
cchjjhñ
ṭhḍh
tthddhn
pphbbhm
yrlw
śsh

c) sandhi-rules:

1.a + a = āi + i = īu + u = ū
a + ā = āi + ī = īu + ū = ū
ā + ā = āī + ī = īū + ū = ū
2. ě disappears without changing the preceding vowel:
a + ě = au + ě = uö + ě = ö
i + ě = io + ě = o
3.a + u = oa + i = e
4. u and i followed by vowels other than ě become respectively w and y.
5. ö and o followed by vowels other than ě become w.

Another difficulty that might arise in tracing back the basic words are the homonymous derivatives, for example:

angawit may be derived from the root 1. awit, 2. kawit.
amurug(akěn) may be derived from the root 1. purug, 2. wurug.
anapih(i) may be derived from the root 1. sapih, 2. tapih.
anambe (anambay) may be derived from the root 1. sambe (sambay), 2. tambe (tambay).

--- ix ---

anawwang may be derived from the root 1. sawwang, 2. tawwang.

All these homonyms, whose ultimate meaning is determined by their context, are caused by the fact that the use of the prefix (m)a + the nasalization or pre-nasalization of the initial vowel or consonant of the basic words has resulted in the same form of the first syllable of the derivatives, i. e., ang-, am-, an-. These changes from the different initial consonants of the basic words into the same first syllable of the derivatives are limited and can be stated as follows:

a)the initials p, b and w change into m, so that words like
1.manggěng, māpag, mayu, mara are derived from panggěng, pāpag, payu, para.
2.Marabas, miani, mamual, mamulus are derived from barabas, bia, bual, bulus.
3.(a)mangun, (a)mangkěl, (a)mangsula, mungkus are derived from wangun, wangkěl, wangsul, wungkus.
b)the initials s and t may change into n, so that words like
1.manaṇḍung, manaḍe, anaput, anambut are derived from sandung, sade, saput, sambut.
2.aninggilis, aningting, anitir, anitisi are derived from tinggilis, tingting, titir, titis.

Other morphological and grammatical details of Kawi can be found in the grammar of Kawi, one of the companion volumes (still in preparation) to this wordlist. Other volumes in the series will include an anthology of Kawi literature (already published) and a history of Kawi language and literature (still in preparation). Taken together, these volumes will provide the necessary tools for the independent study of one of the world's great literary traditions.
